Law, Ethics, and Practice in Planning

A professional planning course focused on the legal, institutional, and ethical foundations of public decision-making.

Course orientation

Planners work within legal and institutional systems that shape land use, housing, transportation, environmental decisions, civil rights, public participation, and community development. This course prepares students to understand those systems and to reason through professional dilemmas in ways that are legally grounded, ethically defensible, and attentive to equity.

Students examine planning law, constitutional foundations of land-use regulation, administrative processes, fair housing, civil rights, environmental law, eminent domain, ethics, professional responsibility, public participation, and contemporary planning controversies through real-world cases.
